Creating a contract
Last updated 2026-09-24
A contract links a contractor to a client and sets the rates and dates that drive their timesheets and your invoices.
Create a contract
Go to Dashboard → Contracts → New contract and fill in:
- Contractor and Client — pick from your existing lists (see Adding clients and approvers and Inviting contractors if you haven't added them yet)
- Pay rate (£) — what the contractor is paid
- Charge rate (£) — what the client is invoiced
- Rate unit — Per hour or Per day
- Start date and End date
- Status — Draft, Active or Ended. Only Active contracts appear for the contractor to submit time against.
Pay and charge rates are two separate fields on purpose — Templio doesn't assume a fixed margin.
Self-billing (if enabled for your account)
If self-billing is switched on for your workspace, the contract form shows a Generate self-billing invoice (HMRC §14) checkbox. Where it isn't yet switched on, the checkbox is shown disabled as "coming soon" — contact us if you need it turned on early.
IR35 and AWR tracking
Once a contract exists, its IR35 status and Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) 12-week clock are tracked automatically from its dates — see Compliance documents, IR35 and AWR.
