Setting up your domain (DNS)
Templio can put contractors on your own web address (for example portal.youragency.co.uk) and send email from your own domain (a subdomain such as mail.youragency.co.uk). Both are optional and both are covered by the custom domain add-on (£15/month on Core, included in Scale). Settings → Domains is for admins only.
Before you start
Use a subdomain for each, not your main domain. Templio only ever adds records under that subdomain, so your existing website and inbox are untouched.
- Never change your root MX records or the existing SPF record on your main domain. They run your inbox. Everything Templio asks for goes on the subdomain.
- When you click Connect for an email domain, Templio creates the sending domain for you. You don't need an account with any email provider; you only add the DNS records shown below.
Set up automatically
If your DNS provider supports Domain Connect and has enabled Templio, the page shows Set up automatically with your provider. Sign in at your provider, approve the change and come back. Templio checks straight away. If you don't see the button, use the manual records below.
Add the records manually
The page lists every record with a Host column and a Value column. Always copy the values from the page.
Web domain
One CNAME record from your chosen subdomain to the target shown on the page. A subdomain is recommended. If you must use a root (apex) domain, add the A record with the IP address shown on the page instead.
Email sending domain
- A TXT record that proves emails really come from you (DKIM).
- An MX record and a TXT (SPF) record on the
send.subdomain, with MX priority 10. These handle bounces and exist only onsend., never on your main domain. - A CNAME record on the
rsend.subdomain. - Optional: a DMARC TXT record at the
_dmarc.<your subdomain>host shown on the page. Add it only if your main domain has no DMARC policy at all, and never change an existing DMARC record.
The Host field
Most providers add your domain automatically, so type only the part shown in the Host column. If the record ends up as name.youragency.co.uk.youragency.co.uk, the domain was added twice; remove the extra part.
Cloudflare
Set the web CNAME, and every Templio record, to DNS only (grey cloud), not proxied.
How long it takes
Changes often show sooner, but can take up to 48 hours. Templio re-checks pending domains automatically (every 10 minutes for the first 72 hours, then daily) and emails every admin when a domain is live. You can also click Refresh verification at any time.
